3D Printed Architecture in South Africa | A4AC Architects

A4AC Architects is a Johannesburg architecture practice that designs for 3D printing. Instead of printing whole houses in concrete, we focus on what 3D printing does best in architecture today: complex components, interlocking block systems, facade relief and precise models. We design them with our own parametric tools and print them on standard equipment.

The state of 3D printed architecture in South Africa

South Africa's first 3D printed building was completed at the University of Johannesburg using large-format concrete printing. Concrete printing is promising for low-cost housing, but it needs specialised gantry printers, specific mix designs and a structural approval route that is still maturing under the National Building Regulations.

Component printing is available now. Printed parts can be made on desktop and mid-size printers, assembled by hand and combined with conventional structure. That is where A4AC works.

Projects and systems

The A4AC Wall: a crowdsourced 3D printed wall. The A4AC Wall is Africa's first crowdsourced 3D printed wall. Anyone can reserve an element, print it at home and send it in. Each piece is numbered and fits its neighbours, so the wall is built by a community of printers rather than one machine.

Interlocking screen walls. We design screen and divider walls from corner-forward cube blocks that notch into each other, so the printed pieces physically lock. The surface lofts between two curves, block density can vary across the wall, and every piece fits a 200 mm print bed. The result is a breeze-block or mashrabiya-style screen that needs no mortar.

Dovetail block systems for domes and vaults. Our interlocking dovetail block system builds curved surfaces, including spherical domes, free-form vaults and oval domes, from printed blocks on grid or diagrid tessellations.

Printed connectors for timber structures. For lightweight pavilions, we generate 3D printed connectors for 300 mm timber battens in geodesic domes, barrel vaults and hyperbolic paraboloids. Each connector is unique, and the tool outputs cutting lists alongside the print files.

Non-planar printing for Ndebele relief panels. We write our own non-planar print paths, so panels print as true relief rather than stepped layers. One tool composes Ndebele-pattern relief panels directly for printing, connecting digital fabrication to African decorative traditions.

Architectural models. We use 3D printing for architectural model making, from massing studies to detailed presentation models.

Large-format printing. We are exploring a large-format robotic printing arm with a 900 by 900 mm reach, to print bigger facade and furniture components in-house.

Why use an architect for 3D printed design?

3D printing does not remove the need for design; it increases it. Every printed part has to fit a print envelope, lock with its neighbours, handle load or weather, and be numbered for assembly. We handle this with parametric tools that generate the geometry, check the fit and export print-ready STL and 3MF files with assembly maps. A fabricator receives a buildable package, not a concept image.

Frequently asked questions

Who does 3D printed architecture in South Africa?

A4AC Architects in Johannesburg designs 3D printed architectural components, including the crowdsourced A4AC Wall, interlocking printed screen walls, dovetail block domes and printed timber connectors. Whole-building concrete printing has been demonstrated at the University of Johannesburg.

Can a 3D printed wall be approved in South Africa?

Non-structural printed elements such as screens, cladding and interior partitions are simpler to approve than printed load-bearing walls, which need a rational design by a structural engineer. We advise on the approval route for each project.

What materials are used?

Material depends on exposure, load and fire requirements, and we specify it per project.
