Africa's First Crowdsourced 3D-Printed Wall

We're building Africa's first crowdsourced 3D-printed wall — and you can help print it. A4AC, a firm of Johannesburg architects, designed an interlocking screen wall made of hundreds of numbered, self-locking blocks. Anyone with a 3D printer can reserve one or more elements, print them at home, and send them in to be assembled into the finished wall. It's a first-of-its-kind experiment in community-made architecture.

 

How to take part

  2. Add your details (name, email, phone) and agree to the consent notice.

  3. Download your elements as print-ready STL or 3MF — your name is embossed under each number.

  4. Print them (settings below), then get them to us — by post, PostNet, or Joburg collection.

What is Africa's first crowdsourced 3D-printed wall?

How do I reserve and print an element?

Open the reservation page, click an available element on the 3D wall, enter your details, and download your reserved parts as STL or 3MF files to print at home.

 

What 3D-printer settings should I use?

Print each part at 100% with no scaling and no horizontal (XY) expansion, using 2 skin layers and 5–10% infill, so the interlocking joints fit together.

Who is behind the project?

A4AC, a forward-thinking commercial architecture practice based in Johannesburg, South Africa — architects who bring emerging technology like large-scale 3D printing into real-world building projects.

Where do I send my printed parts?

Post them to A4AC, Unit 17, Entech Park, Industria North, Johannesburg; send via PostNet Florida, Johannesburg; or, if you're in Johannesburg, arrange collection.

 

Do I have to pay to take part?

No. This proof-of-concept phase runs on community contributions — the parts you print are a donation of your filament and time. Future phases may include material sponsorship.

What's the bigger goal?

This wall is the proof of concept for a larger aim: building the world's largest crowdsourced FDM 3D-printed structure. Everyone who prints an element for this wall is first in line to take part in that record attempt.

Will my details be shared?

No. A4AC only uses your details to communicate about this project — never sold or shared with any third party, and never used for marketing.
