Afrigram: Mobile African Architecture Reimagined
Afrigram is a visionary architecture project developed by A4AC Architects, a design practice based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Drawing inspiration from Archigram’s radical mobility concepts, Afrigram reimagines African heritage, craft, and urban form as a walking city—a speculative architectural response rooted in local traditions but reaching into the future.
Each Afrigram pod or megastructure is designed as a mobile cultural monument: perched, walking, or woven into the urban fabric of Johannesburg. From Carlton Centre to Nelson Mandela Bridge, these pods occupy symbolic city sites—each one embodying unique cultural, architectural, and material narratives.
The digital craft process behind Afrigram blends advanced tools and traditional methods:
-
Collaborations with local beadwork and mural artists
-
3D scanning and photogrammetry of hand-made objects
-
AI-generated design explorations
-
Parametric and sculptural 3D modeling
Afrigram is not only an architectural exploration—it’s a platform for dialogue about identity, mobility, climate adaptation, and the future of African cities.
